Abstract
The invention comprises essentially linear polyesters having a non-standard molecular weight distribution which contain a phosphorus containing compound which inhibits ester interchange so that the polyester retains its non-standard molecular weight distribution on heating. They are obtained by heating together two or more polyesters having the same repeating units and different average molecular weights in the presence of the inhibitor. The inhibitor may be added during or before the mixing of the polyesters, or after a required degree of ester interchange has occured. Suitable phosphorus compounds are triphenyl phosphite, tris - (2:3 - dibromopropyl) phosphate, tetrakis - (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride, tri-(tridecyl) phosphite, diethyl hydrogen phosphite, tricresyl phosphite, 2-ethylhexyl octyl phenyl phosphite, diphenyl phosphite, trihexyl phosphite, tributyl phosphite, bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphite, butyl acid phosphate, tri-biphenyl phosphite and tetrabutyl pyrophosphate, tri-, di- and mono-ammonium phosphates, diammonium sodium phosphate, magnesium or manganese hydrogen phosphate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphite and diammonium sodium pyrophosphite. Suitable polyesters may be derived from o-, m- and p-phthalic acids, adipic and sebacic acids; ethylene, propylene tetramethylene, diethylene and triethylene glycols and cyclohexane dimethanol; a minor amount of pentaerythritol; omp-hydroxybenzoic acids and p-hydroxyethoxy-benzoic acid; and hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol and bisphenol A. In Examples mixtures of polyethylene terephthalates, polyethylene adipates and poly-hydroxyethoxybenzoates are stabilized with triphenyl phosphite, diammonium hydrogen phosphate or tris-(2:3-dibromopropyl) phosphite. The intrinsic viscosities of the component polyesters and the product mixtures are given.
