Abstract

A polyester mixture or block copolyester is stabilized by adding 0.02-4.0% of a phosphorous compound which retards or prevents ester-interchange. The stabilized polyester or polyester mixture may then be heated, e.g. for moulding or spinning without randomization. The phosphorus compound may be organic or inorganic. 30% or more of the polyester may be a crystalline polyester. In examples the polyester component is a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and poly(diethylene glycol terephthalate) (1, 13, 14), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and poly[4-(b -hydroxyethoxy)benzoic acid] (2), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and poly(triethylene glycol terephthalate) (3), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and polytetramethylene terephthalate (4), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and a copolymer of m- and p-hydroxybenzoic acids (5), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and poly(hydroquinone adipate) (6), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene isophthalate (7), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene phthalate (8), a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and poly(bisphenol A phthalate) (9), a mixture of poly[4-(b -hydroxyethoxy)-benzoic acid] and polyethylene adipate (10), a mixture of poly[bis(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexane terephthalate and poly(triethylene glycol terephthalate) (11), a mixture of poly(bisphenol A isophthalate) and poly(diethylene glycol isophthalate) (12), and a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene adipate (15). Phosphorus compounds used are triphenyl phosphite (1, 11, 12, 13), tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)-phosphate (2), tri(tridecyl)phosphite (3), tetra(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (4), tricresyl phosphite (6), diphenyl phosphite (7), trihexyl phosphite (8), tri(bisphenyl)phosphite (9), diammonium hydrogen phosphate (14) and ammonium dihydrogen phosphite (15).
