Abstract
1,088,131. Photo-electric modification of electrical signals. MATTH. HOHNER A. G. Feb.17, 1965 [Feb. 18, 1964], No. 6856/65. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions G5 and H3] The spectrum of audio-frequency signals, particularly in an electronic musical instrument, is modified by a filter including a photo-sensitive element the electrical properties of which are controlled by a co-operating light source. The filter may be a passive network, Fig. 4 (not shown) comprising a high pass branch 151, 154 and 157 and a low pass branch 152, 155 and 158. The photo-sensitive resistors 151, 152 are controlled by a light source 153 or a plurality of light sources or shutters. In the embodiments of Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5 (not shown) valve or transistor amplifiers are provided with negative feedback connections comprising tuned circuits including photo-resistors whose resistances and hence the characteristics of the feedback connections are controlled by one or more lamps or shutters. The lamps may be in an oscillator or multi-vibrator circuit (Figs. 1 and 5) to give a periodic modulation to the audio signals, or pulsed by discharge of a capacitor (Fig. 3) to give an exponential attack or decay. Frequency independent modifications to the signals may also be made by means of further photo-resistors 88 and 89, Fig. 2, illuminated through a grey wedge 94 to effect a volume control and photo-resistor 86 illuminated through an oscillating grey wedge 95 to produce an amplitude vibrato or tremolo effect.
