In a compact upright piano the wippens 21 are mounted below and rearwardly of the horizontal playing portions of angular keys 17 arranged on a keyboard 13 and hammers 28 are arranged to be operated by the wippens which receive a keying thrust from a depending portion 17c of the corresponding angular key and a counterweight 35 carried by the lower portion of each hammer, returns to rest on its respective depending key portion after a respective string - is struck and acts to return the associated hammer to a normal rest position, after release of the key. In operation as a key 17 is depressed, the vertical depending portion 17c of the key actuates wippen extension 24 via roller 19 and padded block 25 and causes the wippen 21 to trip. jack 23. across protuberance 25a and so drive hammer 2.8 into string 29. After striking, the hammer 28 returns to a position free of the string 29 and, an arched wire. 35. mounted in. butt 31 of the hammer contacts a check pad 17d on the lifted depending, portion 17c of key 17.
