Abstract

1,087,645. Filling and coating confectionery. W. E. EGERTON. Sept. 20, 1966 [July 5, 1965], No. 28314/65. Headings A2A and A2B. A machine for filling and coating, flour confectionery such as pastries, cakes and buns, hereinfater described as applied to the filling and coating of eclairs, comprises an intermitently movable conveyer 1, on which are mounted a plurality of open carriages 2, each holding an eclair. The machine also comprises a piercing and filling unit 4 mounted on a carriage 5, which is reciprocated horizontally in a direction perpendictular to the conveyer, so that two needles 19, projecting from said unit, pierce two eclairs, when the carriage is moving towards the stationary conveyer 1, and leave holes in these eclairs, when the carriage retreats from the conveyer. When the needles are completely withdrawn from the holes, the conveyer 1 moves to bring the two pierced eclairs into alignment with the filling unit's two filling tubes 9 projecting from a valve 6, actuated by an arm 11, connected to a double-acting pneumatic ram 12. The conveyer 1 is then halted. Cream is supplied to the inlet 7 of the valve 6 through a flexible pipe 17 and a rotary pump 14, connected to the base of an open-topped cream reservoir 13. When the carriage 5 moves towards the conveyer 1, the tubes 9 enter and traverse the holes in the two eclairs, and when the carriage is about to retreat, the ram 12 moves the arm 11 , so that cream is fed through the retreating tubes into the holes. When the tubes are about to leave the filled eclairs, the ram 12 moves the arm 11 so that the supply of cream is switched from the tubes 9, through an outlet 8 from the valve 6 and a flexible pipe 18, into the top of the reservoir 13. The conveyer then moves to bring the two filled eclairs into alignment with two tubes 32 extending from a valve 25, mounted on a second reciprocating carriage. The valve 25 is similar to the valve 6, and is actuated, by a pneumatic ram 28, to dispense chocolate icing from the tubes 32, as they move over the eclairs during retreat of the second carriage from the conveyer 1, which is again halted. The chocolate icing is circulated through the valve 25 and a reservoir 23. The conveyer 1 again moves to bring the two completed eclairs into alignment with a pusher unit 30 mounted on the second carriage, which again moves towards the conveyer 1, so that the two complete eclairs are pushed, by two pusher elements, on to a discharging conveyer 3. The two reciprocating carriages advance more slowly towards the conveyer 1 than they retreat. In filling confectionery according to the invention, jam or sweet-meat fillings may be used instead of cream.
