Abstract
Detergent alkylates are obtained by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon, in the presence of an alkylating catalyst, with a chlorinated product obtained by continuously feeding a liquid C10- 17 paraffin feedstock, containing not less than 95% normal paraffisn, into o e end of a reaction zone comprising one or more towers, withdrawing the product at the other end and injecting chlorine into the reaction zone at not less than 2 points along the zone in such quantities that the product contains no more than 35 atoms chlorine per 100 molecules paraffin feed. It is preferred to use mixtures of paraffins whose chain lengths differ by not more than 5 carbon atoms in order to facilitate separation of the detergent alkylate from unreacted paraffin. Examples 3 and 4 describe the alkylation of benzene, using AlCl3 as catalyst, with a chlorinated C10- 13 paraffin.ALSO:Alkyl chlorides are made by continuously feeding a C10- 17 paraffin feedstock, containing not less than 95% normal paraffins, into one end of a reaction zone comprising one or more tower reactors and adding chlorine to the reaction zone at not less than 2 points along said zone in such quantities that the content of combined chlorine in the product is not more than 35 atoms chlorine per 100 molecules of paraffin feed. It is preferred to operate at 50-150 DEG C. and to remove by-product HCl at points between the chlorine feeds. The preferred feedstock is that which contain paraffins whose chain lengths differ by not more than 5 carbon atoms. The chlorinated paraffins are used to prepare detergent alkylates (see Division C5). Examples describe the chlorination of n-decane and a C10- 13 mixture of n-paraffins.
