Abstract

1,087,210. Cathode-ray oscilloscopes; semiconductor circuits. VYZKUMNY USTAV MATEMATICYKCH STROJU. Dec. 20, 1965 [Dec. 23, 1964], No.53895/65. Headings H3T and H4T. In a sampling oscilloscope for analysing recurrent A.C. waveforms by displaying samples of the latter as (vertical) deflections of a (horizontal) time base, the time base voltage is produced in discrete steps, each of which is synchronized with a sampling pulse but of random amplitude. Referring to Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the random amplitude time base generator comprises a free-running sawtooth wave generator (301) utilizing a PNPN diode (D 1 ), the output being supplied via a gate (302) to a storage circuit (303) including a transistor (Q1) in an emitter follower circuit providing, when the gate is periodically opened, a succession of random amplitude pulses (E R ) for application to the horizontal deflection plates of the oscilloscope tube 107. These pulses are also supplied via an adjustable attenuator (112) to an adding circuit (110) in which they are combined with an adjustable voltage from source (111), the output of the adding circuit being fed as a reference voltage to an amplitude comparison circuit 108 having as second input a sawtooth wave from generator 102 triggered (at 101) by a pulse derived from the recurrent waveform (Ea, Fig. 1, not shown). Amplitude coincidence of the two inputs then results in an output which is utilized to produce sampling pulses in generator (103) for controlling a gate (104) to which the recurrent waveform is supplied via terminal 100. The output samples are then amplified in a wide band amplifier 105 and supplied via a pulse stretcher 106 to the vertical deflection plates of the tube (107) and over lead 201 to a blocking-oscillator pulse generator (304), the output of which controls gate 302. Adjustment of the voltage source (111) determines the time position (with respect to the commencement of a cycle of the recurrent waveform) of the portion to be displayed whilst adjustment of the attenuator (112) determines the width of such portion.
