Abstract
<PICT:1087184/C6-C7/1> The surface of a ductile metal e.g. steel member is hardened while retaining its ductility by depositing a mask on the surface of the member which protects a continuous area defining a plurality of unprotected areas, e.g. spots not more than 0.1 inch diameter, subjecting the member to surface hardening e.g. case-hardening such as carburizing, nitriding or carbonitriding and removing the mask so that the surface contains a plurality of hardened portions e.g. carburized dots 10 supported and separated by a continuous matrix of unhardened member 12a. For example, a cleaned carbon steel sheet may be first dipped in a photo-resist, a pattern of dots fixed on exposure to mono-chromatic light using an opaque negative pattern and then developed. After removing unexposed photo-resist, the sheet may be immersed in a copper cyanide plating bath until a copper plate 0.7 mil thick is electro-deposited. After removing the developed dots, the copper clad sheet may be immersed in a cyaniding bath consisting of NaCl, NaCN and BaCO3 at 1450 DEG F. until carburized to a depth of 0.002 inch. The copper may be then stripped from the sheet in a CrO3 bath. The negative pattern may be provided with square or other rectilinear holes to provide the carburized sheet with channels for surface lubricants (see Fig. 3 not shown). Instead of a cyanide bath, the copper clad sheet may be heated at 950-1050 DEG F. in an atmosphere consisting of 70% NH3 and 30% N2+H2 for nitriding.
