Abstract
Acrolein and acrylic acid are prepared by the oxidation of propylene with oxygen in the vapour phase at elevated temperatures in the presence of a catalyst comprising Mo, Te, P and oxygen wherein in catalyst contains more than 0.10 or less than 1.0 gm. atom of Te, and more than 0.17 and up to 1.0 gm. atom of P per gm. atom of Mo and is supported on a material comprising silica, it is preferred to effect the reaction at 300-600 DEG C. in the presence of a gaseous diluent, e.g. N2 or steam. Examples are provided.
