Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of filled vinyl resin compositions, a vinyl resin in particulate form is intensively mixed with a filler while increasing the temperature of the mixture to the sinter temperature of the vinyl resin, sufficient kinetic energy is imparted to the mixture so as to prevent complete fusion or agglomeration of the mixing components, the mixture is chilled while maintaining the kinetic energy to a temperature below the sinter temperature of the vinyl resin, and the resulting powder is recovered. Specified vinyl resins are polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinyl formate, vinylidene chloride, vinyl alkyl ethers, acrylic, maleic and fumaric esters and acrylonitrile and mixtures thereof with up to 20 weight per cent of hydrocarbon resins, acrylic resins, rosin ethers and abietic acid and derivatives thereof. Specified fillers are titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate and clay, and other materials, e.g. plasticisers and stabilizers, may also be incorporated. The compositions may be used in casting, moulding, extruding, calendering and fluidized bed coating. Examples describe the preparation of compositions by mixing polyvinyl chloride, n-octyl-n-decylphthalate, epoxidized soya bean oil, barium/cadmium soap and titanium dioxide.ALSO:Substrates may be coated by flame spraying, electrostatic spraying or fluidised bed coating with pulverulent vinyl resin compositions prepared by intensely mixing the resin with one or more additives other than plasticisers while increasing the temperature of the mixture to the sinter temperature of the resin, sufficient kinetic energy being imparted to the mixture to prevent complete fusion or agglomeration of the components, and chilling the mixture to below the sinter temperature of the vinyl resin. In examples a wire grid is cleaned and degreased and coated by heating and immersing twice in a fluidised bed of a pulverulent composition of polyvinyl chloride, n-octyl-n-decyl phthalate, epoxidised soya bean oil, cadmium/barium soap and titanium dioxide, and fusing the coating obtained in an oven at 233 DEG C. for 2 minutes.
