Abstract

A rotary electric motor or generator comprises a stator S having arranged on a circle an even number of field poles 1, 3, 5 sequentially of opposite polarity and of further poles 2, 4 rigid with the field poles and alternating therewith with a constant angular displacement between any two poles, and an unwound rotor R having distributed about its circumference facing the stator a plurality of magnetizable armature sections 6 ... 8 of a number equal to that of the stator pole pairs and each having a circumferential extent substantially equal to the arc between the centre lines of successive further poles so that it can provide flux paths linking simultaneously a further pole with both adjacent field poles the sections occupying substantially the entire circumferential extent of the rotor; the further poles have windings which in the case of a motor are energizing windings but in the case of a generator are induced windings in which magnetic flux reversal is effected by the armature sections alternately directing the field pole fluxes. As shown, the sections are segmental soft Fe sheets embedded in an A1 body 12, and there are two such rotors keyed to a common shaft, a fan 9 impelling an air stream between end plate openings 13, 14; the field poles are energized by either electrical windings or permanent magnets, and there are two stators S, either the rotors or the stators being mutually angularly shifted to eliminate inoperative periods. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4, the rotor is disposed radially outside the stator. As a generator, the machine produces a substantially rectangular voltage, possibly multiphase, the phase number and shift corresponding to the number of stators and their mutual displacement; a two-phase vehicle battery charger is envisaged, and the poles may have short-circuiting rings. As a motor, the further windings are periodically energized preferably through semi-conductors controlled, e.g. inductively, electromagnetically or photoelectrically, by a member rotating with the rotor; speed adjustment is by variation of field winding voltage or selection of energizing winding connections.
