Abstract

1,085,778. Shearing. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Nov. 26, 1965 [Dec. 9, 1964], No. 50286/65. Heading B3W. In a crank-operated shear which is one of a pair arranged to trim the opposite edges of metal plates and which has a fixed lower blade and a movable upper blade, the upper blade is mounted in a blade holder which is free to slide or pivot in the upper blade beam so that the cutting blade can move in a direction away from the cut edge of the plate during the return stroke in order to relieve the pressure between the cutting blade and the cut edge. The upper cutting blade 22 is mounted in a holder 21 of trazoidal cross-section which is seated in a correspondingly shaped recess in the blade beam 5. The means for attaching the holder to the beam comprises a bolt 23, Fig. 3, projecting from each side of the blade beam and having slidably mounted thereon a shackle 24. A block 25 slides in a slot in the shackle, is biased by discsprings 27 towards the bolt 23 and has a bore which receives a pin 26 which is secured in the blade holder 21, Fig. 2. The springs 27 normally hold the blade-holder against the face A of the blade beam but the force exerted by the springs is less than the force due to the friction between the cutting blade and the cut edge of the plate so that during the return stroke the blade-holder moves away from the face A and slides down the face B. To facilitate the removal of the blade holder each shackle 24 has a projecting hook 29 which in the uppermost position of the blade beam is engaged by a forked member 31 provided with a pin 30. The forked member 31 is mounted on the piston rod 32 of an hydraulic cylinder 33. Admission of fluid to the rod end of the cylinder moves the forked member 31 and with it the shackle 24 off the pin 26. The shackle 24 slides along and is supported by the bolt 23. In a modification the blade beam (40), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), has a semicircular recess therein which houses an axle (42). The blade-holder (45) also has a semicircular recess (46) which engages the projecting half of the axle (42). There is a wedge-shaped gap between the blade-holder and the blade beam on the side remote from the cutting blade (49) so that during the return stroke the blade-holder (45) can rock against the force of a compression spring (50). The axle (42) is secured to the blade beam by shackles (44) and the blade holder is secured to the axle (42) by brackets (47).
