Abstract
1,085,509. Counters. LEIPZIGER BUCHBINDEREIMASCHINENWERKE VEB. March 3, 1966, No. 9379/66. Heading G4D. [Also in Division D1] An automatic book-stitching machine has control means comprising a pair of drums which rotate step-by-step in opposite directions in correspondence with the number of sheets stitched, the directions of rotation being reversed on completion of the required number of sheets. A drum 2 is rigid with a rotary shaft 1, and a drum 4 is journalled on shaft 1. The inner ends of the drums are provided with gearwheels 7 and 8 respectively, and the outer ends of the drums are provided with ratchet wheels 9 and 10 respectively. The rim of drum 4, adjacent ratchet wheel 10, is provided with a scale (6) having numerals equal in number to the number of teeth on a ratchet wheel. A disc, rigid with shaft 1, is provided at its rim with a scale (5) similar to scale (6) and located contiguous to the latter. A gear pinion (11) meshes with gear 8 and normally meshes with a gear pinion (12) meshing with gear 7, whereby drums 2 and 4 normally rotate in opposite directions. Pinion (12) is movable axially against spring bias to disengage from gear (11), whereby the drums may be rotated independently of one another, when drum 4 is rotated to locate numeral zero of scale (6) in an initial position, and disc 2 is rotated to locate a numeral of scale (5) equal to the number of sheets to be sewn, opposite the numeral zero of scale (6). A frame 31, 32, 33, adapted to be oscillated in unison with the operation of the sewing machine via a linkage 33a, carries pivoted pawls 16 and 27. Respective pins 36 engage with the pawls and with recesses 38 at the respective ends of a pivoted bar 21. When numeral zero of scale (6) is in its initial position, a pin 17 projecting from drum 4 engages an abutment 20 on bar 21 to rock the latter clockwise, whereby pawl 16 is engaged with ratchet wheel 10, pawl 27 is disengaged from ratchet wheel 9, and a roller 26, carried by a spring-biased lever 24, engages a detent notch 23 in bar 21. When the machine is started, the drums are rotated in opposite directions by one step for each oscillation of frame 31, 32, 33, whereby pin 17 recedes from bar 21 and a pin 18 projecting from drum 2 approaches bar 21 to engage an abutment 19 thereon after a number of oscillations equal to the numeral of scale (5) initially set opposite the zero of scale (6). Bar 21 is thereby rocked counterclockwise to disengage pawl 16 from ratchet wheel 10, to engage pawl 27 with ratchet wheel 9, and to engage roller 20 with a detent notch 23a, while a pin 42 on bar 19 actuates a microswitch 41. The machine then stops. The ma chine on being re-started will operate until pin 17 re-engages abutment 20. The drums are provided with additional pins 43 adapted to co-operate with rollers 50 carried by levers 44, 45, 46, 47, whereby pawls 51, 52 advance a drum 53 carrying pins 54 adapted to actuate associated microswitches for exercizing various control functions.
