Abstract

1,165,587. Selective printing. ADDRESSOGRAPH-MULTIGRAPH CORP. 12 Sept., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 41673/67. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines-A machine for printing on a form (F), Fig. 1 (not shown) data from a credit card (CR) and a plurality of type wheels such as P3, Fig. 2 comprises a bed 12 on which the form is placed so as to overlie the credit card and the type wheels, a platen carriage 14 including a roller platen 122 and movable from a home position as shown across the bed 12 and back again to effect a printing operation, and includes means preventing further actuation of the platen carriage until at least one type wheel has been reset. A dater (20, Fig. 1) may be provided. Index-setting arrangements-Each type wheel, (e.g. P3), is formed with an integral pinion 54 by means of which the type wheel may be rotated, a lever (K3) operated by a finger piece 44 and formed with a gear segment 46 which meshes with a gear-wheel G3 meshing with the pinion. An indicator strip 49 bearing digits corresponding to those on the type wheel is formed with the lever K3, the selected digit appearing in a window W3, Fig. 3. A detecting means (not shown) may aid accurate digit selection. Roller impression arrangements.-The roller platen 122 is eccentrically mounted on a shaft (124), Fig. 6 (not shown), provided with a gear sector 126 which co-acts with a rack (128, Figs. 1, 6) to lower the roller as a printing stroke is begun, the sector 126 idling over a second rack (130, Fig. 1) near the end of the stroke, and coacting with the second rack to raise the roller for the return stroke, to prevent double impressions. The platen carriage includes a leg 104 on which a roller 92, Fig. 3, is rotatably mounted. Type wheel alignment mechanism.-The roller 92 coacts with a camming surfacing 88 on a lever 80 during a printing stroke, to control the pivoting of the lever about a pin 82. On the outward stroke, the lever pivots counterclockwise, raising an ear 94 and permitting a rocker member 68, Fig. 2, to pivot clockwise under the action of springs 61, 63, Fig. 3. The rocker member 68 pushes a pawl 57 into engagement with the type wheels and allows a pawl 56 to engage with the gear-wheels under the action of springs 64, 66, the pawls acting to align the type wheels. Interlocking devices.-When a printing stroke has been completed, further actuation of the platen carriage is prevented until at least one type wheel has been reset. During the outward stroke of the platen carriage 14, the rocker member 68 is pivoted by springs 61, 63, and a screw 170 thereon engages an arm 140 bearing a roller 146 to push the roller into a position between two teeth of each of the gear-wheels. A locking member 160, Fig. 3, pivotally mounted on a pin 67 which also bears the arm 140, and linked to the arm by a spring (162), Fig. 5 (not shown), is thereby pivoted to rest on a pin 65 to which the springs 61, 63 are connected. As the return stroke is effected, the rocker member 68 pivots counter-clockwise, whereas the arm 140 and locking member 160 remain is position, the pin 65 finally engaging a recess 164 in an end of the locking member 160, and being prevented from being rotated clockwise. If the platen carriage is thenmoved towards the printing position, a flange 177 on the leg 104 engages a flange 176 on the lever 80, because the springs 61, 63 are inoperative and exert no force on the lever 80, a weak spring 86 being sufficient to maintain the lever in its starting position. When the type wheels are reset, the roller 146 is displaced, and the locking member 160 is disengaged from the pin 65, rendering the mechanism operative. If the type wheels are incorrectly set, the pawls 56, 57 will engage teeth of the type wheels and gear-wheels, and the motion of the rocker member is thus not completed. The lever 80 will therefore not follow the roller 92, and a printing operation is prevented.
