Abstract

1,085,246. Ammunition fuzes. ETABLISSEMENT SALGAD. Dec.11, 1964 [Dec. 14, 1963], No. 50641/64. Heading F3A. An impact-operated percussion fuze, in which arming is delayed by a clockwork mechanism, has a casing comprising a body 2 and a nose 4 housing a firing-pin 8, a balance wheel 27 and a primer carrier 10. The carrier 10 is slidable in a transverse bore (9), Fig. 2 (not shown), and during transport is held against the thrust of springs (12, 13) by a bolt 30, spring-supported and engaged in a recess 34 of the carrier, so that the primer (11) is out of alignment with the pin 8. Rack teeth 15 on one side of the carrier engage a toothed shaft 16 carrying a gear 21 which, through gearing 26, is controlled by the balance wheel 27, which is locked by an extension 31 of the bolt 30. In the unarmed condition, the pin 8 is aligned with a blind bore 18 in the carrier, below which is a primer 19 and a detonator 20. A safety pin 39, removed by hand before launching a missile fitted with the fuze, extends through a bore 40 below the bolt 30, to hold the bolt in the locking position. Carrier 10 carries a pin 28, which projects into a bore leading to the periphery of body 2 and, when the carrier is in the armed position, the pin projects from the body, thus indicating the position of the carrier 10. By means of pin 28 the carrier can be returned to its original position. After removal of safety pin 39 and discharge of the missile, due to inertia, bolt 30 sets back, thus freeing the balance wheel 27 and the carrier 10. Springs (12, 13) then displace the carrier until primer (11) is aligned with the firing pin 8, the movement being braked by the clockwork mechanism to delay arming until the missile has travelled some distance from the gun. A spring 35 snaps over the conical end of the bolt 30 to secure the bolt in the armed position.
