In a photographic camera for use with a film cartridge, means are provided for locking the film advancing mechanism which means are released when a cartridge is inserted into the camera. When no cartridge is present, a feeler 8, which projects into the cartridge chamber 2, is in contact with a surface 7a. The feeler is connected with a control pin 12 against which a pivoted lever 15 is held by a compression spring 20, the control pin being spring-biased by a spring 13 stronger than the spring 20. A detent 17 on the other end of the lever 15 engages and holds fast a ratchet wheel 19 connected to a gear 26 for film transport and meshing with a gear 27 which carries a manual film advance lever 28. Thus the film transport device is locked. On insertion of a cartridge, the feeler 8 is moved in the direction a thereby moving the pin 12 to release the rear arm of the pawl lever 15 and to allow it to be moved into contact with a stop 21a by the spring 20. A second pawl lever 16 remains in contact with a stop 21. If the film inserted is of a sensitivity not settable on an exposure metering device associated with the camera, a control abutment (5) Fig. 2 (not shown) on the cartridge either does not move the feeler 8 or moves it so far that the pin 12 contacts the pawl lever 16 and causes a detent 18 to engage the ratchet wheel 19, so that in either case the film advance mechanism remains locked after insertion of the cartridge.
