Abstract

1,085,094. Alternators. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. April 23, 1965 [April 28, 1964], No. 17503/64. Heading H2A. In an alternator, for use in road vehicles, comprising within a casing a rotor carrying a field coil 12, Fig 2, and surrounded by a stator having output windings 13, and two sets 14 ... 16, 18 ... 20 of semi-conductor diodes whose respective cathodes and anodes are connected to corresponding output terminals 17, 21 and whose respective anodes and cathodes are connected to phase points on the stator windings 13, the terminals 17, 21 are formed on respective electrically conductive, e.g. Cu, plates 32, 36, Fig. 8, on which the respective diode sets 14 ... 16 and 18 ... 20 are carried with their cathodes and anodes electrically connected to their corresponding plates, a third set 22 . . . 24 of diodes providing an input to a voltage regulator 25 controlling the field coil current is carried by a third electrically conductive plate 38, and the plates are engaged with an electrically insulating, e.g. nylon, member 39 secured to the casing. The member 39 is resilient and channelled to receive the plates and forms with them and their diodes a separate unit which is bolted to rotor shaft bearing support arms (27, 28), Fig. 1, with the terminal 21 earthed through the easing. The rotor is interdigitated, the terminals are of differing sizes to prevent incorrect connection, and the plate 32 has an additional diode heat sink 34.
