Abstract
1,084,960. Valves. TEDDINGTON AIRCRAFT CONTROLS Ltd. Nov. 16, 1965 [Dec. 30, 1964], No. 52815/64. Heading F2V. With a main valve 3 and a pilot valve 11 in the closed position shown the gas flowing in the direction of the arrow 2 passes through baffled openings 5 in the valve 3, a chamber 20 and an orifice 8 into chambers 9 and 26. The gas acts on the front face A of the valve 3 tending to unseat it and is opposed by the gas in chamber 20 and differential piston areas in chambers 26 and 9 as well as a spring 28. When a solenoid 32 is energized to open the pilot valve 11, the chambers 9 and 26 communicate with atmosphere via a filter 13 and a chamber 22 opposed to chamber 9 remains open to atmosphere through a filter 23 so that the valve 3 unseats and gas flows past ribs 17 to an outlet 34. The chamber 26 may be supplied by leakage past differential piston area 24 instead of by a passage 27 in which case a dash-pot action is provided. The valve will continue to function should the spring break. In a modification the main and pilot valves are both normally open in which case the spring 28 is disposed in chamber 22. The main valve is supported on carbon bearings 4, 15, 18, 25 appreciable wear of which does not affect the valve operation due to the substantial difference in the opposing areas on which the gas acts.
