Abstract
Compositions for making stable, oriented, non-retractable polymeric films comprise 30 to 60 parts by weight of a linear organic polymer having reactive functional groups and 30 to 70 parts by weight of a polymer having an inorganic skeletal structure and reactive functional groups in a volatile, non-reactive solvent for said polymers, the functional groups of said polymer having an inorganic skeletal structure being reactive with the functional groups of said organic polymer only upon stretch-orientation of the molecules of said organic polymer and said solvent being present in amount to form a film-forming composition. The organic polymer may be a polymer of vinyl alcohol or chloride, optionally with vinyl acetate, vinyl acetals, vinyl ketals, vinyl pyrrolidone or acrylonitrile, or a polyester or polyamide. Suitable inorganic polymers are polysilicates or polysiloxanes, and corresponding structures of titanium, vanadium, zirconium, tin, germanium and phosphorus. Light polarizing films may be prepared by incorporating dichroic materials, e.g. iodine or dyestuffs; and the compositions may also comprise plasticizers, e.g. ethylene, triethylene, tetraethylene, hexaethylene and nonaethylene glycols, N-hydroxyethyl formamide, N-hydroxyethyl acetamide, formamide and ethanolamine salts; and cross-linking agents, e.g. borax, boric acid, titanium lactate, glyoxal and diphenyl diisocyanate. Specified solvents are dimethyl formamide, and mixtures of water with propanols. Examples describe film-forming compositions comprising (1-3) polyvinyl alcohol, a polymer of tetraethyl orthosilicate, iodine, glycerol, boric acid, water, ethanol and isopropanol; and in further examples the polyvinyl alcohol is replaced by (4) polyvinyl butyral, or copolymers of vinyl alcohol and vinyl acetate, vinyl pyrrolidone or acrylonitrile; and the polysilicate by (5) a polytitanate, polystannate, polygermanate, polyvanadate, polyzirconate or polyphosphate.
