Abstract

1,084,361. Controlling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Aug. 16, 1965 [Sept. 21, 1964], No. 38485/64. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor safety system, under emergency conditions, boric acid is urged into containers within the core. Helium gas within each container is compressed by incoming acid and functions as a shock absorber. The helium gas is displaced from the container, by the acid, into an external pressure vessel through a pre-set orifice until the pressures in the vessel end container balance. The arrangement is applied to a heavy-water moderated reactor having light water neutron shieldtanks. The moderator calandria' tank is penetrated by tubes forming the boric acid containers. (Following shut-down, the system is flushed with demineralized water. This prevents corrosion by lithium Hydroxide formed from the irradiation of B10 in the acid.
