Abstract

1,084,289. Electro-physical measurement. KRIVOROZHSKY GORNORUDNY INSTITUTE. Nov. 24, 1964, No. 47715/64. Heading G1N. In apparatus for determining the dust content of air the air is drawn at a specified rate, as by an extraction fan, through reference and test ionization chambers in which ionization is effected by low level alpha emitters which may be pre-set in position during manufacture to locate the zone of maximum ionization relatively to the collecting electrodes. Each radiation source comprises an inorganic plastic disc U 2 , in which plutonium 239 is embedded, mounted in a stainless steel holder on a carrier 32 which can be set during manufacture by means of a thread along the axis of a sleeve 33. The air is fed through pipe 36 the ends of which carry cowls and fog eliminators, the reference chamber inlet having a changeable filter 39. High tension electrodes E2 localize and increase the ionization. The collecting electrodes C 2 are connected differentially to a D. C. amplifier. The apparatus is arranged as a portable unit energized from a rechargeable battery via a D. C. transformer including a transistor oscillator. A switch allows different sensitivity ranges to be selected.
