Abstract
1,084,073. Making synthetic filaments having crimp potential. MONSANTO CO. Feb. 22, 1965 [March 2, 1964], No. 7572/65. Heading B5B. Filaments consisting of a thermoplastic polymer and having a potential crimp are made by wet spinning a solution of the polymer in an organic solvent and drawing the filaments, immediately on leaving the extrusion orifices, and while they are still in a liquid or a semiliquid gel state from the spinneret face along a straight path which is at an acute angle with the face of the spinneret instead of normal to the spinneret face (as in conventional spinning processes). The filaments are then subjected to a normal annealing process by maintaining them at an elevated temperature while they are relaxed in order to cause them to become crimped. The angle between the straight path of the filaments leaving the outlet face of the spinneret and the outlet face may be 1 to 45 degrees and is preferably 10 to 30 degrees. The thermoplastic material may comprise a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate composed mainly of the former. Owing to the filaments being withdrawn from the spinneret along a path which is at an acute angle to the outlet face of the spinneret under a tension sufficient to stretch the filaments substantially, the degree of stretch is variable across the cross-sectional area of the filaments. Once a crimp has been developed in the filaments, for example, during a normal annealing process it is not destroyed if the filaments are heated in subsequent processing such as dyeing. The crimp is not destroyed by immersion of the filaments in boiling water. As shown in Fig. 1, a spinning solution is pumped through a pipe 13 to a spinneret 10 immersed in a coagulating bath 11 in a trough 12 and is extruded through the spinneret to form filaments 14. The filaments 14 are drawn from the spinneret 10 at an acute angle off the face thereof by take-up rolls 16 under the adjustably mounted guide bar 15 and in contact with the solvent stripper bars 17 and 18.
