Abstract
A coating composition comprises a colloidal suspension in water of 1 to 35% by weight acrylic or methacrylic ester resin, 0 to 15% auxiliary film forming resin, 0.25 to 20% silicone resin, 0 to 7% of a benzophenone light stabilizer, 60 to 98.75% organic solvent and 0 to 38.75% transparent colorant, the film forming resin being a urea/formaldehyde, melamine/formaldehyde, nitrocellulose, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate, butyrate, ethyl cellulose or epoxy resin. Acrylic resins specified are polymethyl(meth)acrylate, polyethyl(meth)acrylate, polypropyl(meth)acrylate, polybutyl-(meth)acrylate, polysteary(meth)acrylate and an ethyl methacrylate-methyl methacrylate copolymer. The silicone resin may be an organo siloxane. Specified stabilizers are 2,21-dihydroxy - 4,41 - dimethoxybenzophenone, 2,21,4,41 - tetrahydroxybenzonphenone, 2 - hydroxy - 4 - methoxybenzophenone and 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone. Solvents specified are amylacetate, butylacetate, butanol, isopropanol, ethanol, 2 - ethoxy or 2 - butoxy ethanol, 2-ethoxyethyl acetate, toluol, xylol, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone and aromatic hydrocarbons. Examples of the colorant, which may be an organic dye or pigment, are given. The compositions are used to coat the glass spheres in reflective signs (see Division G2).ALSO:Glass spheres in a reflective sign are coated by spraying on to the spheres a colloidal suspension in water of a formulation comprising 1 to 35% by weight of an acrylic or methacrylic resin, 0 to 15% of an auxiliary film former, 0.25 to 20% of a silicone resin, 0 to 7% of a benzophenone light stabiliser, 60 to 98.75% of an organic solvent and 0 to 38.75% of a transparent colorant, said auxiliary film-forming resing being a urea-formaldehyde resin, melamine-formaldehyde resin, nitrocellulose, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate butyrate, ethyl cellulose or epoxy resin.
