Abstract
1,083,961. Compression mouldings. FORMWOOD Ltd. Jan. 8, 1965 [Jan. 18, 1964], No. 969/65. Heading B5A. Relatively thin-walled mouldings having surfaces in different dimensions are formed from a mixture of comminuted organic fibrous material and a binder by pro-pressing the mixture cold in a first mould thus forming a flexible moulding having a curved portion in a first dimension and by subsequently subjecting the flexible moulding to heat and pressure in a second mould to flatten the curved portion and obtain the final shape of the moulding. As shown the invention is applied to produce a U-shaped form, and it is stated that the invention is applicable to the manufacture of open box-like components, and concrete shutterings. The mixture 5 is initially cold pressed between parts 6, 7 of the first mould to produce the flexible moulding 1, which is subsequently placed in the second mould, Fig. 2, where it is subjected to heat and pressure to produce the final moulding. The angles 3 in the moulding 1 remain substantially unaltered in the second moulding, but the portion between the angles 3 is planar in the final moulding. The female moulds 6 may be formed as links in an endless chain, Fig. 5 (not shown), and the male mould formed as a press ram travels synchronously with the upper run of the chain, a feeding device being provided at one end of the apparatus, and a continuous moulding issuing from the other end to be cut into sections by a reciprocably mounted parting saw.
