Abstract

Novel compounds of formula <FORM:1083936/C2/1> wherein Ar and Ar1 when taken separately are phenyl, tolyl, monohalophenyl, xenyl, trifluoromethylphenyl, a -naphthyl, b -naphthyl, 2-pyridyl, 3-pyridyl, 4-pyridyl, a -thienyl, b -thienyl, a -furyl, or b -furyl, or Ar and Ar1 when taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached are 9-fluoroenyl, 9,10-dihydroanthracen - 9 - yl, 10,11 - dihydro - 5H-dibenzo - [a,d] - cyclohepten - 5 - yl, or 5H-dibenzo - [a,d] - cyclohepten - 5 - yl; R1 and R2 when taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached are aziridino, azetidino, pyrrolidino, piperidino, piperazino, morpholino or thiomorpholino or a radical of formula <FORM:1083936/C2/2> and R1 and R2 when taken separately, and R4 are hydrogen, C1- 6 alkyl, C1- 6 hydroxyalkyl, di - lower - alkylamino - lower alkyl, C3- 6 alkenyl, C3- 6 alkynyl, or C3- 6 cycloalkyl, and Z is a radical of formula -C­C-R3 or -CH = CH-R3 where R3 is hydrogen, halo, phenyl, a -naphthyl, b -naphthyl, 2-pyridyl, 3-pyridyl, 4-pyridyl, a -thienyl, b -thienyl, a -furyl, b -furyl, lower alkoxy-lower alkyl, lower alkyl-mercapto, lower alkylmercapto-lower alkyl, lower alkylamino-lower alkyl or di-lower alkylamino-lower alkyl, are prepared by carbamylating a substituted tertiary propargyl carbinol of formula <FORM:1083936/C2/3> to replace the H atom with a carbamic radical of formula -CONR1R2, and, if desired, catalytically hydrogenating the acetylenic radical to provide the ethylenic radical. Phenyl 1 - (4 - bromophenyl) - 1 - phenyl - 2-propynyl carbonate is prepared by reacting 1-(4 - bromophenyl) - 1 - phenyl - 2 - propyn - 1 - ol with phenyl chloroformate. Therapeutic compositions having activity against certain bacteria and fungi, and malignancies, contain as active ingredient a compound of Formula (I) above.
