Abstract

1,083,788. Electrostatic precipitators. KOPPERS CO. Inc. June 10, 1966 [June 11, 1965], No. 26082/66. Heading H2H. In an electrostatic precipitator, a series of sampling pulses of selected higher magnitude than the normal working voltage are applied to the electrodes and the voltages are adjusted according to the presence or absence of sparking in the precipitator. The working voltage is applied in the form of a series of pulses from a capacitor 7, changed through a resistor 1 and diode 13 and discharged through the electrodes and diode 12 by the firing of a tube 4. A similar circuit operated by tube 5 provides interleaved sampling pulses. Control voltages representative of the precipitator currents from resistors 23, 24 are passed through diodes 25, 26 to a capacitor 27, the voltage across which is compared with a reference 30 and the difference passed to an amplifier 31. If no sparkover occurs, a motor 35 increases the working and sampling voltages until the sparkover of the sampling pulses is sufficient to arrest the motor. If the sparkover level drops and both voltages cause excessive sparkover, the capacitor 27 voltage causes a reversal of the amplifier input signal and hence reversal of the motor 35. The sampling pulses may be equal to or narrower than the working pulses and may be numerically equal to or less than the working pulses. The tubes 4, 5 are fired by pulse generators 43, 44, energized from variable frequency phase displaceable alternations 40, 41. The working pulses are inhibited during the sampling pulses. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), two sets of sampling pulses are generated of differing amplitude from tubes (5), (6), from which the control voltages are derived.
