Abstract
A varnish composition comprises (a) 30 to 65% of a polyvinyl formal, (b) 25 to 40% of a blocked isocyanate, (c) 1 to 20% of a phenolformaldehyde resin and (d) 1 to 30% of an epoxy resin. All percentages being by weight of the total solids content of the composition. The isocyanate constituent is preferably the product obtained by condensing 3 moles of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate with one mole of trimethylolpropane, l followed by blocking the triisocyanate obtained by means of phenol. The phenol-formaldehyde constituent is preferably a cresol solution of the condensation product of a mole of cresol with 0.0-2 moles of formaldehyde. The epoxy resin is preferably the condensation product of epichlorohydrin with diphenylolpropane. The composition is obtained by simply mixing the four constituents in a common solvent, e.g. a mixture of cresol and xylene. After application, e.g. to wires, the varnish is heated to provide an enamel coating on the wire.ALSO:Articles particularly electric wires are coated with a varnish comprising (a) 30 to 65% of a polyvinyl formal (b) 25 to 40% of a blocked isocyanate (c) 1 to 20% of a phenol-formaldehyde resin and (d) 1 to 30% of an epoxy resin (see Division C3). In an Example a copper wire is enamelled in six layers using a vertical enamelling machine fitted with six dies, the temperature in the oven varies in a regular manner, the maximum being 400 DEG C in the upper two thirds.
