Abstract

Condensation polymers of C15- 25 unsaturated hydroxy fatty acids or their esters with cyclic unsaturated compounds which contain either at least two conjugated double bonds (one of which may be in an aromatic ring) or at least one double bond and an activated single bond conjugated therewith are produced by heating 0.5-20 moles of the cyclic compound with 1 mole of the fatty acid or ester, with optionally other fatty acids or their esters, to a temperature of 50-200 DEG C. in the presence of a Lewis acid as catalyst, water being evolved during the polymerization. The cyclic compound may be cyclopentadiene, styrene, indene, acenaphthylene, cumarone, pinene or a mixture of cumarone and indene. The fatty acid or ester may be ricinoleic acid or its methyl ester or castor oil fatty acid methyl ester. The reactants may be heated in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. xylene, which forms an azeotropic mixture with water. The catalyst may be an acid-activated bleaching earth. Up to half of the cyclic compound may be present at the start of the reaction and the rest added during the reaction.
