Abstract
1,083,511. Processing histological tissues. TECHNICON CO. Inc. Jan. 18, 1966 [Feb. 3, 1965; May 14, 1965], No. 2220/66. Heading G2J. An apparatus for processing histological tissue microscopic examination comprises (Fig. 2) a plurality of receptacles 46 arranged in a circle, each receptacle containing a processing liquid maintained at a controlled temperature by an associated liquid bath 18 containing a heater 274, a thermostat 278 and a stirrer 262. The tissue is carried in a perforated container 166 supported on a tube 184 which is held in an aperture in a dome shaped top 154. The container 166 is fitted with a cover 168 which seals the receptacle 46 in which the container is disposed, so that a partial vacuum may be applied by a vacuum pump 238 attached to a conduit 235 via a tube 100 and a conduit 218. The container 166 is intermittantly moved from one receptacle 46 to an adjacent receptacle by a motor 418 Fig. 5 (not shown) which causes a roller 228 to raise the top 154 and hence the container 166; the top is held in this position by a roller 231 which supports a cam follower on a tube 92 which is attached to the top 154 and is concentric with tubes 90 and 100. The tube 90 which is coupled with tube 92 is then rotated by an intermittantly driven member 232 to move the container 166 over the next receptacle 46, and the roller 231 is withdrawn thus lowering the container 166 into this receptacle. The container 166 is oscillated up and down in its receptacle 46 by the rotation of a cam 234 which engages the cam follower 230 causing the tube 92 to oscillate; the amplitude of the oscillations is small and is absorbed by a helical spring 206 to prevent the vacuum seal being broken. A solenoid 248 is provided which causes the receptacle 46 to be opened to the atmosphere just before the container is removed from the receptacle. The sequence and timing of the operation of the apparatus is controlled by a program control Fig. 5 (not shown). Details of processing conditions using the apparatus are given.
