Abstract

1,083,251. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Feb. 19, 1965 [Feb. 20, 1964], No. 7182/64. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle 1 has the cushion bounded along one side at least by a wall comprising a plurality of contiguous hinged members 5 pivoted at 6 on the structure, to which it is attached also by flexible seals 11 and 12. The cavity 16 so formed is pressurized through port 15 and valve 18 and a flexible duct 17 leads air, controlled by valve 19, to a port 14 in member 5. A flexible skirt member 4 is attached to each member 5 and the air from each duct 17 flows down the surface of the skirt to form an air curtain 13. The duct 17 may be dispensed with, air for the curtain flowing directly from cavity 16, which forms in either arrangement a recuperation chamber to provide a restoring force should skirt 4 and member 5 be deflected upwardly by an obstacle. The member 5 may be balanced about pivot 6 by a spring or by extending the member equally on either side of the pivot 6 so that cushion pressure acts on the member to provide a restoring force. The skirt members 4 are U-section of the form disclosed in Specification 1,043,351.
