Abstract

1,083,210. Image pick-up tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1965 [Jan. 12, 1965], No. 54071/65. Heading HID. An electron image derived from a light or an X-ray image at a photocathode 22 is directed on to a target 50 comprising a continuous insulating layer exhibiting the property of transmissive secondary electron conduction to establish a charge image on the far side of the target and the far side of the target is scanned by an electron ray generated at a photocathode 30 by a flying-spot to read out the charge image. An electromagnetic or permanent magnet focusing system is provided for the electrons on both sides of the target. The target comprises a porous coating of potassium chloride, magnesium chloride or magnesium oxide, e.g. 25 microns thick, on an aluminium signal layer, 500 Angstroms thick. A support layer of aluminium oxide, 1000 Angstroms, may be provided. The target surface is stabilized at the potential of the scanning ray photocathode while a small positive potential is applied to the aluminium layer to establish a field of less than 10<SP>4</SP> volts per centimetre across the porous layer.
