Abstract

1,082,419. Pull starters. TECUMSEH PRODUCTS CO. July 22, 1966 [July 26, 1965], No. 33193/66. Heading F1K. A rewind pull starter for an internal-combustion engine having a rotary gear element such as a toothed flywheel 18 operably connected to the crank-shaft 20 for rotation thereof, comprises a tube 30 supported adjacent the engine gear element and a reel 22 journalled on the tube for rotation about the tube axis, a length of a flexible element 24 such as a rope being wound on the reel so that it is rotated when the element is unwound therefrom and a spring 64 housed in the tube being operably connected to the reel to bias it into a rewound position, the tube carrying a pinion 80 which is movable axially therealong and which is arranged to engage and be disengaged from the engine gear element, reversible coupling means being actuable by the reel in response to rotation thereof to effect such engagement and actuable by the engine gear element upon over-run thereof relative to the pinion to effect such disengagement. The reversible coupling means includes a hub fixed to the reel and positioned around the tube, the hub having at least one slot therein angled with respect to the tube axis and the pinion having at least one internal projection received in the slot. A drag element 86 frictionally engages the pinion to impede rotation thereof. It would be possible to arrange the axes of tube 30, reel 22 and pinion 80 parallel to the axes of the crank-shaft and flywheel.
