Abstract
1,082,386. Hydraulic couplings. SERCK R. & D. Ltd. Oct. 5, 1965 [Oct. 6, 1964], No. 40667/64. Headings F2C and F2L. An hydraulic coupling comprises a rotor 17 splined to a shaft 16 and including passages 18 containing pistons 19 pressed by springs 20 against an inclined surface 15a on part 15 of a shaft 14 driven from pulley 30; the passages 18 communicate with, and sweep on rotation of rotor 17, a pair of arcuate ports (21), Fig. 3, not shown, in housing 10, the ports being connected by passages and the flow through these passages being controlled by a spool 26 movable by a temperature responsive, wax - filled capsule 27 having a plunger 28. In use, to drive a fan for liquidcooled I.C. engine, the liquid flows around capsule 27 and at low temperature the hydraulic fluid passes freely between the two ports on rotation of shaft 14 and the rotor remains stationary; as the temperature rises the spool 26 gradually closes the connection between the ports and the rotor and shaft 16 are rotated until the connection is completely closed when the shafts 14, 16 are locked together through the coupling. The housing forms a reservoir connected to the two ports through non-return valves (31), Fig. 3, (not shown), to replenish the the working liquid.
