Abstract
1,082,361. Making aerofoil blades; stamping; welding. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Jan. 7, 1965 [Jan. 9, 1964], No. 1079/64. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3R. In the manufacture of hollow blades of aerofoil cross-section in which a U-sectioned preform of sheet material is pressed around a former 20 between two dies 26, 28, the arms 12, 13 of the preform extend beyond the trailing edge of the former and during the pressing operation are formed with a channel-section by means of a projection 31 and recess 32, thereby stretching the preform around the former. During the final closing movement of the dies, one of the legs is severed by means of a knife 30. The workpiece 35 is then placed in a fixture comprising a non-magnetic metal channel 40, Fig. 6, a L-shaped member 41, a wear-resisting plate 42 and an insulating block 43 while it is spot-welded by electrodes 44, 45. After spotwelding the work is held by clamps 46, 47, Fig. 8, and seam-welded between roller electrodes 48, 49. The trailing edges may alternatively be connected by brazing, soldering, riveting or by adhesive. The thickness of the trailing edge is then reduced under pressure between dies. The blades may be further shaped by filling with a fusible material and pressing between a further pair of dies.
