Abstract

108,231. Cranner, B. Sept. 19, 1916 Semaphore signals. - -Apparatus to facilitate semaphore signalling comprises two signaling arms 1, 2 pivotally mounted on a support 4 which may be adapted for insertion in the ground. The arm 2 is carried by a disk 5 having the letters oc other symbols arranged thereon in radial columns and on concentric circles as shown, and the arm 1 carries pointers 8 of different lengths corresponding with the concentric circles In use, the arm 2 and disk 5 are rotated to bring the column containing the symbol to be transmitted into line with an index mark A on the support 4. The arm 1 is then moved to bring the end of one of the arms 8 into coincidence with the desired symbol. The arms 1, 2 are then in the required signalling position. As shown, the letter R is being transmitted. The apparatus may be used also to interpret received signals. To facilitate this, two sets of symbols and pointers may be provided, arranged on opposite sides of the disk, one set being used in transmitting and the other in receiving. Instead of signalling directly by the arms 1, 2, the device may be used to control the position of other signalling arms through suitable transmission such as chain gearing. The arms 1, 2 may be of different lengths to increase the number of possible signals.
