Abstract

Polydienes are made by polymerizing a 1,3-diene in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a compound of a metal of Group VIII of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table, an organo-metallic compound of Al, and a nitrile containing an aliphatic group. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, and 1,3-pentadiene. The nitrile may be acetonitrile, ethyl nitrile, propylnitrile, or benzyl nitrile. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The exemplified catalyst is aluminium diethyl chloride and cobaltous chloride. The molecular weight of the polymer is controlled by the nitrile, and the polymer may be liquid, e.g. liquid cis-1,4-polyisoprene.
