Abstract
Compounds of the formula BR3, where R is an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical are prepared by reacting an organic aluminium compound containing an Al-R bond with boron oxide activated by boron fluoride. The process may be carried out using a boron fluoride etherate. Preferably the boron fluoride and oxide are heated together, an organic solvent is added, giving a suspension which dissolves on heating, and then the organic aluminium compound is added. The organic aluminium compound may also contain halogen. Examples describe the preparation of triethyl boron and triisobutyl boron using Al(C2H5)3, Al(i-C4H9)3 and Al2Cl3(C2H5)3.
