An insulating heating cushion, which may be in the form of a blanket, contains a heating coil 2 arranged for connection with alternating current mains or a direct current source and a supplementary conductor connected to the mains through a diode rectifier G1 or the direct current source. The supplementary conductor lies just below the surface of the cushion and its position 5 is marked, e.g. by colouring on the cushion. The interaction of the electrodes produces a beneficial electric field which supplements the heating effect of the coil.
