Abstract

A peroxide composition of reduced shock sensitivity comprises benzoyl peroxide and at least one organic peroxide selected from: Type I having a ten hour half life at 110-175 DEG F., Type II having a ten hour half life at 175-250 DEG F. and Type III having a ten hour half life at 250-350 DEG F., said composition having been prepared by recrystallization. The composition finds application in the polymerization of ethylene or styrene, e.g. in a long tubular reactor with hexane or propylene as modifier. Specified peroxides are: (I) lauryl, caproyl, decanoyl and p-chlorobenzoyl peroxides and t-butyl peroxybivalate; (II) t-butyl peracetate and perbenzoate, and dicumyl peroxide; and (III) di-t-butyl peroxide.
