Abstract

The freeness of paper-making stock in a conduit 2 is measured by causing some of the stock to flow through an elastic conduit 3 to a container 4 which is mounted on a balance beam 11 and which has a screen in the bottom on which a mat of fibres forms as the water passes through. A timer controls the operation of the device. After a set time an indicator arm 15, which is mounted on beam 11 to pivot therewith as the weight of water in container 4 increases, is actuated by compressed air to mark recording chart 18. Arm 15 has a member 16 and according to if and when the member contacts a member 17 on an adjustable arm 14 a servomotor is actuated to vary the degree of refining of the stock. After a further set time water through three way valve 5 and compressed air through valve 8 are fed into container 4 to clean it. If necessary the stock is diluted by water from nozzle 33, the degree of dilution being controlled by the pressure in the conduit between a constant volume feeding pump and a "friction" spiral 36, the pressure increasing with concentration, and causing nozzle 33 to be lifted or lowered to vary the amount of water flowing over the top of weir 34.
