Abstract

An aqueous polymer dispersion suitable for use in the treatment of textiles is prepared by mixing while stirring a solution of methylolmethacrylamide dissolved in butylacrylate with a solution of potassium persulphate and the sodium salt of a paraffinsulphonic acid (C12-C18) in water at 80 DEG C. and holding the mixture at 80-90 DEG C. for about an hour, after the addition of further quantities of monomers, persulphate and sulphonate.ALSO:Cellulosic fibrous materials are crease-proofed, by impregnating them with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a substance having a molecular weight of up to 350 containing at least one N-methylol group and/or N-methylol ether group and with an aqueous solution or dispersion of an acid or potentially acid catalyst and reacting the N-methylol groups and N-methylol ether groups with each other, with other groups of the substances bearing them and/or with the cellulosic material in the presence of trioxane in an amount of 0.1-4 times the total molar amount present of the N-methylol groups and N-methylol ether groups. Suitable compounds containing N-methylol groups or N-methylol ether groups are those derived from compounds having the formulae:- <FORM:1081039/D1-D2/1> in which X is a sulphur or oxygen atom, R1 and R2 are alkyl radicals having 1-5 carbon atoms, hydrogen atoms or radicals having the formulae, <FORM:1081039/D1-D2/2> which are connected together directly or via radicals having the formula <FORM:1081039/D1-D2/3> or <FORM:1081039/D1-D2/4> is an alkyl radical having 1-5 carbon atoms, an aryl radical or a hydrogen atom, R4 is an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms, a hydrogen atom, a hydroxy group or an alkoxy group having 1-5 carbon atoms or if the two <FORM:1081039/D1-D2/5> groups are connected together direct, both R4 groups together may form the radical <FORM:1081039/D1-D2/6> , R5 is an alkyl radical having 1-5 carbon atoms or a hydrogen atom, R6 is an alkoxy group having 1-5 carbon atoms, a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group, R7 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical having 1-5 carbon atoms, R8 is a hydrogen atoms an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms or a radical of the formula -NHR11 and R9, R10 and R11 are alkyl groups having 1-5 carbon atoms or hydrogen atoms, or of the formula:- <FORM:1081039/D1-D2/7> in which R12 and R13 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals having 1-5 carbon atoms, A is a divalent hydrocarbon radical having 2 - 8 carbon atoms, x = 0 or 1, y = 0 or 1, z = 0 or 1 and (x + y) = 1 or 2. Reaction may be effected by drying the impregnated material and then heating to a temperature of up to 180 DEG C or by drying at an elevated temperature and then maintaining the material at a temperature of about 60 DEG C for 4 - 10 hours. The materials may be mechanically shaped, e.g. by compression, crimping, goffering, ironing, calendering, embossing or pleating, during or after drying and rendered permanent by the reaction. The treating liquor may also contain wetting agents, water repellents, e.g. paraffin wax emulsions containing aluminium or zirconium, silicones or perfluorinated aliphatic compounds, plasticizing agents, e.g. ethenoxylation products of high molecular weight fatty acids, alcohols or acid amides, high molecular weight polyglycol ethers and esters thereof, high molecular weight fatty acids, fatty alcohol sulphonates, stearyl-N, N-ethylenurea and stearylaminomethyl pyridinium chloride and finishing agents, e.g. cellulose esters or ethers, alginates, polyamides, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic or polymethacrylic acid or esters or amides thereof, polyvinyl propionate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, copolymers of vinyl chloride and acrylic esters, butadiene and styrene or acrylonitrile, a -dichloroethylene, b -chloroalkylacrylic esters or vinyl-b -ethyl ethers and acrylamide or the amides of crotonic or maleic acid or of N-methylolmethacrylamide, isocyanates, diisocyanates, polyethylenimines, polyamines, ethenoxylated polyamides, silicic esters and dyes which are azo compounds and contain metals, e.g. chromium, cobalt or copper, combined therein. Threads, filaments, fibres, bands, non-woven knitted, woven or netted fabrics comprising cotton, linen or regenerated cellulose fibres alone or in admixture with wool, silk, cellulose ester, acrylonitrile, polyamide, polyester or polyolefin fibres may be treated. In Example 8 cotton is simultaneously dyed with an acid dye Acid blue 158.
