1,081,021. Toothbrushes. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. April 8, 1965 [April 22, 1964], No. 15018/65. Heading A4K. A toothbrush includes an electric motor in its handle (10) to move its brush head (12) in a circular or elliptical path, the head (12) carrying tufts (18) each formed of interspersed long and short bristles (22, 24). In use, the free ends of the long bristles (22) become anchored in tooth depressions so that the circular movement of the brush head (12) causes each long bristle (22) to generate a conical path, the short bristles (24) following the brush head movement over their whole length. The long bristles (22) thus have their effective stiffness increased by wrapping around the short bristles (24) until their frictional anchorage in the tooth depressions is overcome and they perform a rapid sweeping motion. The short bristles may be thicker than the long bristles.
