Abstract
In an electrolytic cell as claimed in claims 1-6 of Specification 932,945 in which the electrodes are in the form of thin titanium sheets coated on one face with platinum, the sheets are of similar dimensions and are arranged in register to form a stack, each sheet lying in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stack and the stack is mounted in the cell with its longitudinal axis at an angle to the horizontal equal to that by which the electrodes are to be inclined to the vertical, the sheets having the platinum face uppermost. As shown the cell comprises a trough-shaped housing 10 formed with electrolyte inlet <PICT:1080919/C6-C7/1> 14, electrolyte outlet 15 and gas vent 16, and being closed by a cover plate 11, the interior surfaces of the cell being covered by a layer 17 of electrically insulating, corrosion resistant material, e.g. rubber or plastic. The end electrodes of the stack are each attached to a block of insulating material 19, 20, the upper block 20 being in turn bolted to the cover plate 11 and the lower block 20 abuts against flange 24 to form a fluid tight seal. The end plates of the stack are connected to a source of electrical potential by insulated rods 22, 23. Spacers (25) Fig. 2 (not shown) may be located at desired points between the sheet electrodes.
