Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formulae <FORM:1080765/C2/1> <FORM:1080765/C2/2> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R1 is an ethylene, 1,2-propylene or 1,3-propylene group, and R1 is a hydroxyl group and R2 is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom or R1 and R2 in combination form a 16a , 17a -oxido group, and their preparation by reaction of a D 16- or 16a ,17a -oxido-pregnane with a dithiol in the presence of a catalyst, followed, if desired, by 16,17-epoxidation or reaction of a 16a ,17a -epoxide with a hydrohalogenating agent 17a - Hydroxy - pregn - 4 - en - 20 - one, its 6a -methyl derivative and their 17-acylates are prepared from the 17a -hydroxy-16b -halo-3-thioketals of the invention by simultaneous dehalogenation and desulphurization with Raney nickel, followed, if desired, by acylation. 6a -Methyl-16a ,17a -oxido-progesterone is prepared by treatment of 6a -methyl-16-dehydroprogesterone with alkaline hydrogen peroxide.
