Abstract

1,080,673. Surgical drills. H. L. WEBB. July 15, 1966 [July 15, 1965], No. 29994/65. Heading A5R. A surgical trephine for drilling a hole in a patient's nail comprises a cylindrical body 10 adapted to be rotated between the finger and thumb, and an integral or attached drill bit 16, the trephine having a shoulder 12 to limit the penetration of the drill bit to a depth equal to the approximate thickness of the nail. As shown, a separate drill bit 16 is retained in the trephine by a screw 14, 15, in an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the shoulder limiting the penetration is provided on the enlarged shank of the bit. The drill bit may have opposed helical flutes and may be formed with a wide angle conical cutting face. The cylindrical body 10 is of metal or a plastics material.
