Abstract

1,080,549. Light-transmitting polymeric sheet. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 1, 1965 [Dec. 29, 1964], No. 52650/64. Heading B5A. [Also in Division G2] Light-transmitting sheets are made by polymerizing a liquid (that normally forms a transparent solid polymer) in a casting cell to form a flat sheet while the cell is maintained in a horizontal position. The liquid comprises monomer containing a single CH 2 =C< group per molecule and, when introduced into the casting cell, has uniformly dispersed within it insoluble translucent solid particles having maximum linear dimensions of 2-2000Á (preferably between 10-100 Á), a refractive index for the sodium D line that differs from that of the solid polymer formed by polymerization of the monomer alone by at least 0À05 but not more than 1À5 (preferably at least 0À1 but # 0À4), and in such quantity that their total surface area is 1-50 times preferably 3-10 the area of the lower surface of the layer of liquid in the cell, and the viscosity of the liquid being such that the particles settle in the cell to form a thin uniform layer adjacent said lower surface before polymerization. The monomer is preferably methyl methacrylate or a mixture of methyl methacrylate (at least 60% by wt.) with a copolymerizable compound containing a single ethylenically unsaturated group per molecule. The monomer may be partially polymerized, or contain some polymer, being in the form of a syrup, which may have a viscosity of 0À1-10 poises. The polymerizable liquid may also contain up to 5% by wt. of a copolymerizable monomer having at least 2 CH 2 =C< groups per molecule, so as to render the copolymer formed non-thermoplastic. The solid particles may be aluminium oxide, titanium dioxide, zinc carbonate, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, calcium silicate, calcium magnesium orthosilicate, calcium molybdate, anhydrous calcium sulphate, calcium oxide, calcium sulphide, magnesium aluminate, mica, lead carbonate, zinc oxide or zinc sulphide, and may form a layer of thickness substantially equal to the maximum particle size in the sheet. A small amount of dyestuff may be added to the liquid to give it a grey neutral tone. The liquid may also contain a polymerization initiator, light stabilizers and an antistatic agent. The polymerized sheet may be used as a back projection screen or an illuminated sign or ceiling.
