Abstract

1,080,453. Automatic control of speed; programmed control. MOBIL OIL CO. Ltd. Sept. 23, 1964 [June 27, 1963], No. 25626/63. Headings G3N and G3R. [Also in Division G1] A vehicle is mounted on a dynamometer for sustained testing and the throttle of the engine of the vehicle is controlled by a programmed system to maintain the equivalent road speed at a desired value independently of the load applied to the engine by the dynamometer. As shown, a selection control panel 4 is fed from a tape 1, a timing switch 2, or manually 3, with voltages representing a maximum throttle setting, desired road speed and the gradient of path along which the vehicle is assumed to be moving. Throttle maximum signal 5 and the desired road speed signal 6 are fed to a throttle control circuit 7, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprising a cathode follower having the anode supplied with the signal 5, and the grid with the difference between the signal 6 and a feedback road speed signal 17 from a tacho-generator 14 coupled to a dynamometer rolls 12 driven by an engine 10. The signal, from the cathode-follower, controls a throttle servo mechanism, forming part of the circuit 7, which actuates the throttle of the engine 10 through a mechanical linkage which is adjustable in dependence on the travel of the throttle mechanism of the engine under test. The gradient signal 18 is adjusted through a potentiometer to allow for the car weight and controls the excitation of a gradient/brake circuit 16 varying the load applied to the engine by a dynamometer comprising a D. C. generator working into a resistive load, which is driven through a shaft 13 from the rolls 12. The shaft also drives a fan 21 providing engine cooling and a load representing windage on the vehicle and a flywheel 15 of a mass selected to compensate for the vehicle inertia.
