Abstract

Pure p-xylene is produced by passing impure liquid p-xylene through a non-return valve (7) and a plurality of scraped surface chillers (3), pumping a portion of the resulting slurry of large p-xylene crystals through a recycle coil (6) having a path of approximately the same length as that of the chillers, and passing the rest of the slurry downwards through a pipe (9) having a permeable filter section surrounded by metal mesh (11) for removal of mother liquor, the remaining crystals being passed downwards through a melting section comprising a jacket heater (5) and an element (12) to produce a melt, a portion of which is forced upwards in countercurrent to the crystals and the rest of which is forced through an outlet as product under the action of pulsating pressure produced by a reciprocating piston (15).ALSO:Pure p-xylene is produced by passing impure liquid p-xylene through a non-return valve (7) and a plurality of scraped surface chillers (3), pumping a portion of the resulting slurry of large p-xylene crystals through a recycle coin (6) having a path of approximately the same length as that of the chillers, and passing the rest of the slurry downwards through a pipe (9) having a permeable filter section surrounded by metal mesh (11) for removal of mother liquor, the remaining crystals being passed downwards through a melting section comprising a jacket heater (51) and an element (12) to produce a melt, a portion of which is forced upwards in counter-current to the crystals and the rest of which is forced through an outlet as product under the action of pulsating pressure produced by a reciprocating piston (15).
