Abstract
<PICT:1080057/C4-C5/1> A refining, i.e. deodorization and deacidification process for glyceride oils and fats in which the hot product to be refined is steam-stripped under vacuum is characterized in that the steam is introduced at a pressure which is about the same value as the vacuum under which the process is carried out and at a temperature lower than that of the hot product to be refined, and in that after the stripping operation the steam is precipitated in a refrigeration step which precedes the step in which the vacuum source is operating. An oil rotary pump is the preferred sole vacuum source, producing a vacuum of 0.1-0.8 mm. Hg.; steam for stripping is obtained by evaporation of water at room temperature under this vacuum and is introduced at 10-35 DEG C. into the hot product at 170-230 DEG C. The process may be operated intermittently or continuously as in Figs. 1; (2) respectively, in which still 4;(41) is supplied with "cold" steam from evaporator 5; (51,511) under vacuum from oil rotary pump 12. Refined oil leaving still 4 is cooled and collected in 13, 14; (141, 1411) while the stripped acids and steam leaving via 7 are cooled to room temperature in 8, the condensed portion collecting in 9 and the volatile portion and the steam being precipitated in refrigerator 11; (111, 1111) at - 40 to - 20 DEG C. For continuous operation boilers (51, 511) containers (141, 1411) and refrigerators (111, 1111) are worked alternately.
