Abstract

To an animal or fish food having a fat content of at least 2 wt. per cent. (dry basis), there is added one or more glycerol ethers of the formula CH2 OH. CHOH. CH2 OR, (where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group of 14-24 carbon atoms) as such or in the form of a physiologically innocuous ester thereof, in an amount of at least 0.01 wt. per cent. based on the lipid content of the feedstuff. The ether may have been synthetically produced, or isolated from naturally occurring sources, such as the liver oil of elasmobranch fish, or from the bone marrow fat of mammals. The glycerol ether mixture may be obtained by mixing the ether mixture derived from a fish liver oil with the ether mixture obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of an ether mixture derived from the liver oil of the same or a different fish.
